Although you might think that it’s easy, in my experience many people have a lot of trouble asking questions. Quite often, people I am teaching to coach will ask me about how they should interpret something one of their learners said or did. They’re usually quite surprised when I say “I don’t know. During the coaching session, did you ask them?” If the person you’re coaching says or does something and you’re not sure why – especially if it seems out of character – the best thing to do is ask why! Humbly, respectfully and because you really want to know the answer! When we humbly and respectfully ask other people to explain things to us, we have a chance to dispel our assumptions, learn something new, and improve our empathy. So, if you aren’t sure…just ask!
