One of the most important things a coach does is lend their learner the courage to try new things. What do I mean by that? Trying out new skills and behaviors is scary – no matter what job grade or title your learner has. As human beings, we’re all afraid of failing. Since confidence only comes through ‘doing’, in order to even ‘try’ something new, the learner needs to ‘borrow’ courage from someone – and that someone is their coach! As coaches, we need to push our learners out of their comfort zones, and then lend them courage while they practice and gain confidence in their new-found abilities.
