The holidays are almost here! If you’re like me, you’ve got lots of extra things to do. Finding ways to fit them in can easily put you off your regular routine. And when that happens, it’s easy to become less ‘disciplined’, at work and at home, then we might normally be. As human beings, once we’re out of routine, it can be hard to get back into it. Hard to get back to being disciplined. Reason is, although we don’t normally think of it this way, discipline is actually a practice. And, like all ‘practices’ that means the more we do it, the better we get at it. And if we don’t continue to ‘practice’, not only do we stop making forward progress, it’s easy to slip back. It’s important to understand this because there are always going to be things that interrupt our disciplined practices. Illness, moving, celebrations, and holidays for example. All normal parts of life. The important thing is not to give up on returning to disciplined practice, but to recognize these normal interruptions as opportunities. Opportunities to make plans to stick to, and get back to, our regular routines and discipline. And the opportunity, to once again, simply practice the discipline of starting again!
