Learning hasn’t occurred until behavior has changed. This is one of my all-time favorite sayings and I use it often in teaching others how to coach, because the only real way to know if someone has learned something is to ‘see’ that they are doing things in the new way. Doing things differently is a struggle for the learner – and uncomfortable – but it’s the only way for them to learn – and to gain the confidence that comes only from doing! It’s also the way for the coach to ‘see’ if learning has occurred! So, if you don’t see the person you are coaching’s behavior changing, I can guarantee that they haven’t learned, even if they tell you they have!
